Setting Up Wireless Network on Windows 7

Before you start sharing your VPN connection over WiFi on Windows 7, first you need to create a wirless network to host your VPN connection. This can be easily done through the following steps:

1- Head over to your Start menu, and type “cmd” in the search bar then right-click on it.

2- Next, choose Run as administrator”.

3- A command prompt window should be displayed. Type “NETSH WLAN SHOW DRIVERS“, and then hit “Enter”.

4-  You should see Hosted network supported: Yes in the generated output. If not, this means that your wireless adapter is not supported. In this case, you will need to use a USB wireless adapter which supports this feature.

5- Exit the command window, and then open it one more time  (refer back to steps 1 & 2).

6- Type  netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=Your_SSID key=Your_Passphrase” in the cmd command window.

7- SSID is the name of you give to your WiFi network so that you can easily identify it next time you try to connect to any new device.

8- Passphrase is the password you specify for your WiFi network.

9- Type in this command “netsh wlan start hostednetwork” in order to activate your network.

Sharing VPN over WiFi on Windows 7

Now that you have setup your WiFi network, it’s time to learn how you can share your VPN over the Wifi connection you have just created. Follow these steps:

1- Press on Windows key+X in order to launch the power user menu, and then choose Network Connections.

2- Here you can see your newly created Microsoft Hosted Virtual Adapter listed among all available network connections. Head over to your currently active network connection (Ethernet or wireless), and then right-click on it. Select “Properties”.

3- Next, go to the Sharing tab, and then make sure to check the option that says Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection.

4- Click on the Home networking connection drop-down menu, and then choose Microsoft Hosted Virtual Adapter.

5- Click OK to save your changes.

Voila! You have successfully turned your computer into a WiFi hotspot with a VPN running on it. Good job!
