OpenVPN is an open source tunneling protocol was developed by OpenVPN Technologies and is by far considered to be the strongest and most secure encryption protocol. For security, OpenVPN relies on peer authentication by using pre-shared keys, HMAC packet authentication and runs without any root privileges. In addition, OpenVPN is compatible with multiple platforms and operating systems. In this article, we will explain to you how to configure OpenVPN on your Asus router.

I) Setting Things UP

Before configuring OpenVPN on any Asus Router, you need to first connect to your router, set your internet network connection to get your IP address.

1- First, go to http://192.168.1.1 to access your router. If you are unable to open your Asus router’s page, in this case you will need to check the guide to obtain the default gateway.

II) Configuring OpenVPN on Asus Router

2- From “Advanced Settings“, click on “VPN“.

3- You will be directed to another window with 2 tabs “VPN Server” and “VPN Client“. Click on “VPN Client” tab.

4- From the “VPN Client” tab, select “Add Profile“.

5- Next, choose “OpenVPN” option, and then type in your VPN connection’s settings in the specified fields:

- Description: in the description field, you can name your VPN connection.

- Username: insert your VPN username.

- Password: type in your VPN password.

If you are having troubles filling in your information, then you can contact your VPN administrator for more support.

6- Meanwhile, download OpenVPN configuration file. If you are using bVPN, you can visit:

https://www.bvpn.com/en/accounts/profile/openvpn_server_list/

and download the configuration file.

7- Press on “Choose file“, and then select .ovpn configuration file of the server you want to connect to, and then click on “Upload“.

8- Click “OK“.

9- Finally, click on “Activate“.

You have successfully set up OpenVPN on Asus router.
