Ubuntu Linux is one of the most popularly used operating systems on desktops. Ubuntu means “humanity towards others” and the Ubuntu project is dedicated to provide users with an open source software so that they can install it and make modifications to it for free. Unity is the default desktop environment for Ubuntu and it is what we used to write our guide. What is great about Unity is that it contains an excellent search tool to to locate all types of applications and documents on your computer.

As for Domain Name Service, or DNS, acts as a bridge between servers and URLs entered by users to reach them. DNS saves users the trouble of remembering domain names and IP addresses. In this article, we will show you how to change DNS settings on Linux.

Changing DNS Server Settings on Linux

By following the steps below, you will be able to easily change DNS settings on Linux. We are using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Unity for demonstration, but the same steps should apply to other Ubuntu versions.

1- From the menu bar at the top right corner, click on the “internet connection” icon.

2- A drop down menu will be displayed, click on “Edit Connections” where a new window called “Network Connections” will appear.

3- You will see a list of internet networks, select the network connection that you are currently using, and click on the “Edit” button.

4- Click on “IPv4 Settings” tab, and then insert the DNS server address you want to connect to in the “Additional DNS Servers” field. For example, if you want to use Google public DNS, you can type in: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

5- After typing in your DNS server addresses, click on “Save” to save the changes you have made.

6- In order for the changes you have made to your DNS settings to take effect, you must connect one more time to your network connection.

7- To reconnect to your network, click on the “internet connection” icon from the menu bar at the top right corner, and then click on “Enable Networking” to uncheck it.

8- A pop-up message will appear notifying you that you have disconnected from your network.

9- Now, click on the “internet connection” icon, and then check on “Enable Networking” to enable it one more time.

10- A pop-up message will appear confirming that you have successfully connected to your network.

Congratulations! You have successfully changed the DNS settings on your Linux.
