We have previously explained how to make changes to DNS server settings on several platforms, including: Windows and Mac OS. In this article, we will show you how to change your DNS settings on your Android device. Short for “Domain Name Server“, DNS is like the phone book of the internet. It contains lists of domain names to interpret them into IP addresses. Internet users can easily remember names of domain, however, machines and computer need to store IP addresses in their memory. Your internet server provider usually gives you default DNS server addresses upon subscribing to their services. However, these DNS servers tend to become slow in time which affects your browsing experience. Changing DNS server settings help you to improve your navigation process on the internet.

Changing DNS Settings on Your Android Device

Like iOS, Android only allows its users to make changes to DNS settings when connected to WiFi only.
DNS or Domain Name System is the translated version of an IP address to a name that is understandable by humans. Since computers only communicate through numbers in the form of IP addresses (e.g. 137.46.78.189). We needed it to be transformed into something that humans can remember. Here is where DNS comes in where it translates IP addresses into names or websites that we can remember (e.g. vpnanswers.com). When a connection is established between an internet user and the ISP server, the user is automatically provided with a default DNS from the server. This DNS is not precisely very reliable and can sometimes expose the user to online security risks. There are alternative DNS online which can be used and can be more secure and more reliable than that provided by the ISP. There is a simple way to change the DNS used by a computer. This way or method differs from one operating system to another.

In this tutorial, we will be demonstrating how the DNS can be changed in the network settings on Windows 10 by going through a few simple steps.

Steps for Changing DNS Servers on Windows 10

DNS server addresses are usually provided by internet service providers to their customers and are configured automatically on their routers or modems. Giant ISPs run their own DNS server networks, in addition, there are a lot of free DNS servers on the internet that can be used as alternatives. Such servers come in handy during outages or to provide a more secure internet environment.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to change DNS servers on Windows 8 or 8.1. Scroll down for more details.

Steps for Changing DNS Servers on Windows 8

2- Select “Network and Internet” from the Control Panel. In some versions, you can select “Network and Sharing Centre” right away. If that is the case, then skip the nest step and click on “Network and Sharing Centre”.

Upon signing up with an ISP (Internet Service Provider), you will be assigned certain DNS addresses as part of your network settings. This address is a key factor that helps you in your browsing activities by making web pages and services load more rapidly. On the other hand, DNS addresses are not that reliable as they slow down sometimes. That is why in this tutorial, we will help you tweak your settings to give you a better browsing experience by changing your DNS servers. Changing those servers on any operating system (e.g: Windows 7) can be interpreted as changing the regular way of communication of Windows 7 to change any hostname of any website into the IP address it uses.

Steps to Change DNS Servers

The following are the steps needed to change your DNS servers in Windows 7. Please make sure that you have an admin access before carrying out any of those steps.

1- Go to “Start” menu, located on the bottom left-side of your screen, and then click to open “Control Panel“. In other cases, there is a “Control Panel” shortcut icon on the desktop.

2- Click on “Network and Internet” once you get into the Control Panel. Sometimes Network and Internet is not visible depending on the size of the icons displayed in the Control Panel. In this case, you can click on Network and Sharing Centre and skip the next step.

3- Click on Network and Sharing Centre.

4- From the left panel menu, click on Change adapter settings.

5- A new window “Network Connections” will open on your screen. Locate your network connection, the one you through which you connect to the internet. This is the connection where you are going to change the DNS servers. If you are using a wireless connection on Windows 7, it will be identified as “Wireless Network Connection“. However, if you are using a wired internet connection, it will be identified as “Local Area Network“.

6- Click on “Properties“.

7- You will find several items on the list, from that list select “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)“.

8- Once you select “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)“, click on “Properties“.

9- Click on the radio button next to “Use the following DNS server addresses” located at the bottom of the window of “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties“.

10- Type in the DNS server and alternate DNS server which you prefer in the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server fields, respectively. Note that it requires only 1 DNS server to be added into the Preferred DNS server area. In this case, you can one DNS in that field and another DNS server in the Alternate DNS server. If you get into the Advanced tab, you can add more than just 1 DNS in the Advanced TCP/IP settings field. Here are some of the suggested DNS servers instead of what is usually assigned by ISPs:

*Google Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8 – Secondary: 8.8.4.4.

*Comodo Secure Primary DNS: 8.26.56.26 – Secondary: 8.20.247.20.

11- Click OK so that the changes you have just made would take effect and to make sure that your efforts do not go to waste.

12- Close all open windows.

13- Now, test your servers by loading several different websites. You would know if the changes you have made are successful, if the pages load faster than they used to or just as fast, but now slower.

Virtual private networks, VPNs for short, are developed to encrypt users’ data on the internet, such as: browsing activities, online transactions, email exchange or any activity that could compromise a user’s personal information. Moreover, VPNs allow users to bypass geo-restrictions to be able to unblock and access any geographically restricted web content. This is because VPNs operate by concealing a user’s original IP address and replacing it with a fake IP selected by the user from a list of server locations provided by the VPN service provider. In order to successfully carry out the tasks mentioned above to provide netizens with a secure, private and anonymous internet environment, VPNs rely on advanced security layers and encryption protocols, like military-grade or bank-grade encryption techniques.

On the other hand, there is no such thing as a perfect system. Sometimes VPNs fail to fulfill their purpose due to internal and external factors, such as: DNS leaks. DNS leaks greatly jeopardize a VPN user’s inbound and outbound traffic to be exposed to ISPs without a warning. That is why, in this guide we will show you how to identify and fix your VPN’s DNS leaks.

How to Identify VPN DNS Leaks

In this section, we will offer you some effective solutions to identify and solve DNS leaks while using your VPN service.

1- DNS Leak Test

In order to be able to successfully fix a DNS leak, you need to first identify it. You can certainly do this by running DNS leak tests. We recommend visiting dnsleaktest.com. Their results are very accurate and reliable. Upon visiting the website, you will be greeted by a message in large font identifying the server location and IP address you are coming from. Therefore, if you visit their website while connected to a VPN, your IP address should be the one assigned to you by your VPN and the location should be the location of the server you are connected to. dnsleaktest.com also offers two types of DNS leak tests, standard and extended.

2- Change Your DNS Servers to Public or Private

Another solution to prevent DNS leaks is to change your DNS servers (given to you by your ISP) to different ones. There are several websites, such as Google, that provide public DNS servers to configure on your router or you device. In this way, you will be able to avoid DNS leakage and also weaken your ISP’s ability to track down the websites you visit. Moreover, changing your DNS servers will increase your connection speed. We have picked a couple of secure DNS servers that you can use for free:

*Google Public DNS: primary: 8.8.8 or you use a secondary one: 8.8.4.4

*Comodo Secure DNS: primary: 8.26.56.26 , secondary: 8.20.247.20

* Open DNS: primary: 208.67.222.222, secondary: 208.67.222.220

In order to change your DNS server, you need to follow the following steps:

1- Go to Control Panel>Network & Sharing Centre>Change Adapter Settings.

2- Go to your main internet connection, then right-click and select “Properties“.

3- Scroll down to Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), highlight it, then click on “Properties”.

4- Be sure to write down your original DNS server addresses so that you would be able to restore them at any time.

5- Click on “Use the following DNS server addresses” radio button.

6- Insert the DNS server address of your choice, then click “OK“.

3- Uninstall and Re-Install Your VPN Client

You must always keep your VPN client up-to-date by downloading the latest versions. This would notably reduce the risk of DNS leaks as sometimes even with the best and most popular VPN service outdated software versions can result in DNS leaks.

4- Choose a VPN with a DNS Leak Protection

Even though VPN providers are developed to provide their users with internet security, privacy and anonymity. However, due to several reasons, DNS and IP leakage take place. One of the reasons is the operating system they run on, such as Windows or Linux. That is why it is preferable to subscribe to a VPN service that comes with a built-in DNS leak protection feature as an additional layer of security. You can check out our top picks of VPNs with DNS leak protection here.

Conclusion

Internet privacy and anonymity provided by VPN services have become the most sought after means of data protection online due to the constant crack down on an individual’s right to online freedom by governments as well as the rise of internet censorship. In addition, we are witnessing an exponential growth of cyber-criminal activities, such as: hacking attacks, phishing schemes, fraud, identity theft, etc. For all those reasons, the very idea of having an unreliable VPN service that is prone to IP or DNS leakage is unbearable. That is why by following the guidelines mentioned above, you will be able to enjoy a secure, private and anonymous internet experience.

DNS remains for Domain Name Server. Whenever you write a web address into your program bar, a solicitation is sent to a Domain Name Server. This server matches space names to IP addresses where the site is really facilitated. The DNS then advises your program which IP location to go to with a specific end goal to stack the site you have asked.

DNS makes an interpretation of space names into IP locations, spoke to by a progression of numbers. For instance, one of Yahoo’s IP locations is 67.195.160.76, and when you write in “www.yahoo.com” to your location bar and land at Yahoo, that is on the grounds that your ISP (Internet Service Provider), with the assistance of their DNS servers, have deciphered that space name from that numerical IP address

In a perfect world, when you’re utilizing a VPN, it’s your VPN’s DNS servers making an interpretation of these IP addresses into space names, instead of your unique ISP. However, now and again, Windows defaults to its unique settings and deciphers those IP addresses through your ISP’s DNS servers, as opposed to your VPN.

One of the minimal known actualities about VPN administration is that notwithstanding the advantages of a changed IP location and information encryption, individual data can even now hole out in the open through something many refer to as a DNS leaks. Some VPN suppliers fabricate DNS leek arrangements directly into their product. For those that don’t, there are manual arrangements too.

What is a DNS leaks?

In the event that you simply get to the web through your standard association by means of your ISP (Internet Service Provider), your PC will be advised to utilize your ISP’s DNS servers. This implies all lookup solicitations will experience your ISP unless you physically determine something else.

At the point when joined with a Virtual Private Network, your PC will be advised by the VPN to utilize their safe DNS servers that are unique in relation to the ones appointed to you by your ISP. On the other hand, do to security blemishes characteristic in windows OS, your PC can entirely utilize the wrong DNS servers, accordingly uncovering your actual IP location to the site you are going to.

Causes of a DNS Leaks?

DNS Leaks can be brought on by an assortment of variables. Something as straightforward as a site deferring its reaction to your PC can bring about a windows machine to change to the unsecured DNS servers. This is the strategy used by numerous vindictive sites to bring about DNS releases and uncover private client data.

Detect DNS Leaks?

DNSLeaktest.com is a free site that can recognize DNS leaks in a matter of seconds. They additionally have supportive data on the most proficient method to quit spilling DNS data automatically. To get the most out of DNS Leak Test, you need to interface with your VPN administration before going to their site, or ensure you revive your program once your association is set up.

By what means would I be able to Prevent DNS Leaks?

There are 3 answers for this windows security blemish. It is very prescribed that you set your PC to utilize a static IP address. This will ensure your new DNS settings aren’t incidentally overlooked.

Utilize a VPN with inherent DNS Leaks Protection.

Programmed DNS Leaks Fix.

Manual Fix.

Utilize a VPN with inherent DNS Leaks Protection.

While most VPN’s don’t yet incorporate this component, there are couple that do. The best part is, they are both to a great degree reasonable and mysterious (they don’t keep information or association logs)

Programmed DNS Leak Fix

DnsLeakTest.com has programming that ought to settle DNS spills on most windows working frameworks consequently. It essentially distinguishes a VPN association and powers your PC to utilize the protected DNS servers when joined.

Manual Fix

In some cases the least complex technique works the best. Before you utilize the manual alternative, please ensure your PC has a static system IP rather than one relegated by DCHP, generally your endeavors could be squandered.

You should do nothing more than determine a DNS server for your PC or switch that doesn’t have a place with your ISP. Comodo SecureDNS is a free DNS server that works awesome. At the point when utilizing the manual alternative, it’s imperative to ensure that your ISP doesn’t utilize Transparent DNS Proxies.

Please follow theses steps on your PC:

Head to the Control Panel then Network Settings then Network Connections

Right tap on the system connector you use for your home syste

Click on properties

Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPV4)

snap properties

Switch from Obtain DNS Address Automatically to Use the accompanying DNS Server Address

finally Enter your new secure DNS data

What is Spotify?

Spotify is the head honcho of online music streaming services. This monster music library has over 20 million tracks streaming for free through a trendy interface that is compatible with all Android and iOS devices as well as computers. You can also share your favourite music with your friends on Facebook and keep up with what your friends are listening to. Similarly to iTunes, you can stay up to date with featured music and top tracks on Spotify. You can also create playlists, follow your favourite artists and listen to some of their favourite music, too. If you sign up for Spotify’s free service, you will be prompted by advertisements in between some songs. On the other hand, Spotify offers a premium service that is ad free and offers mobile listening, an offline mode and allows you to listen to your favourite music in any country if you’re travelling. You can evaluate Spotify’s premium service through a 30-day free trial. Spotify is based in the US, but it streams its service in over 20 different countries, including: Australia, Canada, Italy, Spain, France, Sweden, the Netherlands, Turkey, etc. Spotify’s premium service prices are subjected to international laws. This means that pricing differs from one country to another. For example, Spotify in Australia is subject to the country’s new Netflix tax (GST) and it costs 10% more than it costs in the US.

Recently, the Australian government has introduced a new tax bill, dubbed as the “Netflix Tax” or GST, on all digital goods, ebooks, apps as well as online TV and music streaming services. Even though Netflix doesn’t charge its Australian subscribers the GST tax, Spotify and other services do. As a result, hundreds of thousands of Australian users have turned to other ways to subscribe to their favourite online TV and music services without paying the 10% tax. Luckily, you can avoid GST and subscribe to Spotify in Australia completely tax free by using encryption protocol service providers, like: VPNs or SmartDNS proxies.

How to Get Spotify in Australia tax-free with VPN

You can easily avoid the Netflix tax and enjoy listening to your favourite music on Spotify in Australia by using a virtual private network, aka VPN. While Spotify in Australia can charge GST for your subscription to their premium service through your location which can be identified by their server via your IP address, you can still overcome this problem by subscribing through an entirely different IP address that belongs to a country in which Spotify doesn’t charge as much, like the US for instance. This is how a VPN basically operates. When you use a VPN, your real IP address is masked and replaced with another IP from a different country of your choice from your VPN provider’s list of servers so it would appear to Spotify in Australia that you’re logging into their website from another country, e.g. USA. In this way, you can avoid paying the 10% tax for your subscription to Spotify in Australia.

Moreover, a VPN doesn’t only change your IP address, but it also encrypts all of your data traffic and personal information, including your usernames, passwords and credit card information to protect your data from malicious cyber activities and conceal your online activity from your government’s monitoring systems and other third parties. In addition, you can bypass internet censorship in any country and overcome geo-restrictions by a VPN to get unlimited access to restricted web content and blocked services. This means that you can enjoy your favourite music on Spotify in Australia and in any other country in the world, even if the service isn’t available in that country. You get to enjoy bonus features when you use a VPN, such as: speeding up your internet connection, buffer-free streaming, performing secure financial transactions as well as anonymous web browsing. You can check out some of the best VPN services in the market today that are fairly cheap and offer a solid performance together with the latest hardcore encryption technique (e.g: OpenVPN over SSH and SSL) that can effortlessly slip through any filtering systems, including: The Great Firewall of China.

How to Get Spotify in Australia tax-free with SmartDNS

A faster way to get a premium service on Spotify in Australia without paying the Netflix tax is by using a fairly new encryption service in the world of cyber security known as SmartDNS proxy. Even though a SmartDNS lacks the suave encryption techniques used by VPNs, it is a lot faster and is used by many web surfers to bypass geo-restrictions and stream any content. SmartDNS proxies can alter your IP address enabling you to avoid GST on Spotify in Australia but they don’t provide any form of encryption. SmartDNS is also compatible with all devices and operating systems. There are over 20 popular SmartDNS providers in the market today, but Overlay is most notably for its top notch quality service and diverse features as it is mentioned on their website:

Using innovative technology, developed to complement OverPlay’s range of high-speed VPN servers, access to smartdns is included free of charge in all our subscription packages. Once enabled, you’ll never have to worry about enabling a VPN connection in order to access your favorite sites again, just access them as normal and smartdns will do the magic for you. Not only that, you’ll often find a healthy speed increase too – facebook photos load faster, stream in HD where previously it wasn’t possible, it all just works!

If you’re a sports fan, then you probably know that ESPN is one of the biggest entertainment companies in the world and one of the most popular online sports TVs in USA. Sports and sports channels tend to connect people from different cultures and backgrounds to share a common interest and celebrate the spirit of a good game. However, geographical restrictions and limits imposed by many entertainment companies or governments kill this purpose of a globalized sports base. Unfortunately, ESPN is no different as it restricts its broadcasting to residents within the United States. So, if you live overseas, you won’t be able to watch ESPN outside USA without bypassing their geo-blocking policies first. Even if you are a paying subscriber of WatchESPN, you still can’t access the site outside of this country.

How to Watch ESPN Outside USA

Fortunately, there are several ways to help you go around geo-blocking systems and watch ESPN outside USA. In this article we cover 2 of the most common ways to unblock banned websites and allow non-US residents to watch ESPN outside USA.

1) Watch ESPN Outside USA with DNS Proxy

SmartDNS or DNS Proxy is an advanced technology used by many internet users to bypass US regional restrictions and stream blocked content in the US. SmartDNS provide their users with ultimate high speeds to access any blocked website in the US. By using a SmartDNS, you wouldn’t have to worry about your internet connection getting any slower nor your device affected in any way. Because SmartDNS is compatible with all devices, such as: PC, Laptop, Apple TV, iPad, Amazon Fire TV, Gaming Console, Smart Phone, Android and others, you can watch ESPN outside USA on any device at any time and won’t ever miss your favourite game.

However, one downside to a SmartDNS is that it offers “no encryption and will require you to change some settings every time your IP changes and it’s a bit more difficult to switch off.”

One of the most popular SmartDNS services that will give you an epic streaming experience when you use it watch ESPN outside USA is OverPlay. As it is mentioned on their website:

Using innovative technology, developed to complement OverPlay’s range of high-speed VPN servers, access to smartdns is included free of charge in all our subscription packages. Once enabled, you’ll never have to worry about enabling a VPN connection in order to access your favorite sites again, just access them as normal and smartdns will do the magic for you. Not only that, you’ll often find a healthy speed increase too – facebook photos load faster, stream in HD where previously it wasn’t possible, it all just works!

2) Watch ESPN Outside USA with VPN

Another great way to watch ESPN outside USA is by using a VPN. Do you know how ESPN can block you from accessing its services? Your IP address. Yes, your IP address is your online identity through which any website can track down your geographical location and therefore, block you from having access to its content. A virtual private network (VPN) can help you overcome this issue by replacing your original IP address with another one from a different location (e.g: New York) in order to trick the website you’re trying to access into thinking that you’re connecting from a location that has access to the network. Unlike Smart DNS, VPNs encrypt your connection to reinforce your privacy on the internet. Moreover, by transferring your data through encrypted tunnels, your personal information is fully protected from cyber threats and you will be completely anonymous to all internet filtering systems. In addition, a VPN boosts your internet connection and doesn’t prompt you with changes in your settings, but you can always do that manually whenever you want.
